GETTING your five a day might not be a problem for parents with youngsters at Ledbury Primary, thanks to a grow your own initiative.

But a fine crop could be reliant not just on the hard work of the children, but on continued community support.

The school has been developing its own allotment site this year, and the hope is that fresh vegetables can be sold to parents this summer.

Head teacher, Julie Rees said: "The pupils would like to grow vegetables during the summer term as this helps them understand how our food is grown, the importance of eating vegetables as part of a balanced diet, and enjoying working in the garden as part of a healthy lifestyle."

Mrs Rees added: "Ledbury Primary School would really like to involve any members of our local community who could spare some time to work alongside the pupils in the allotment. They would also welcome any donations of the following; tools, seeds and small plug plants. Hopefully, the pupils will grow enough vegetables to sell as produce to parents during the summer months."

The school's gardening club has been digging in since last month, and members of the community turned up on April 26 to move a pile of top-soil from near the new bike racks down to the allotments.

More beds have been created and seedlings have been planted.

The appeal is ongoing, however, for "any gardening equipment, seeds and pots that people no longer need".

Any donations can be dropped in at the school office, off Longacres.
