MORE than 1,000 primary school children will visit Worcester Cathedral over the next two weeks to see the 'King John, Magna Carta and Worcester' play.

The dramatic production has been specially commissioned by the cathedral to celebrate the Magna Carta 800th anniversary.

The “high impact and high energy” play gives a historical account of Magna Carta, King John and their connection to Worcester and is performed by two actors from Worcester Repertory company in the Quire of Worcester Cathedral, beside King John’s tomb.

Sue Adeney, the cathedral’s education officer, said: “The children are in for a treat - the play is very funny and a great way to learn about an important time in our history.”

Before coming to the cathedral, the play has been touring schools in Worcestershire where it has been “tremendously” received by both children and teachers.

Chris Jaeger, the writer and director of the play, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity given to the Worcester Repertory Company by the cathedral in the Magna Carta anniversary year.

“It is entirely appropriate that we should take a play about Magna Carta and King John, who is of course buried in Worcester Cathedral, on tour and to be able to offer it free of charge to nearly 50 junior schools is absolutely brilliant.”

Ben Humphrey, one of the two actors, said: “It is such a thrill to take a play to so many junior schools and to help them understand some of their history and heritage, while entertaining them at the same time.”

Pupils aged nine to 12-years-old who visit the cathedral to see the play will also be able take part in interpretative activities developing the themes of liberty, human rights and citizenship emanating from the influence of Magna Carta.

These workshops are organised by the cathedral’s education team.

Families can also come to see the play at the cathedral on Bank Holiday Monday, May 4, at either 11am or 1pm. Seats will be allocated on a first come first served basis

The play has been funded by a grant of £12,500 from The Magna Carta Trust’s 800th Anniversary Commemoration Committee.
