WHEN the Gooch family discuss schooldays, the subject of Newent Community School is certain to be common ground.

Four generations of the family have spent a total of 44 years at the school, of Watery Lane.

That is no mean achievement, given that the school itself is only half a century old and is about to mark its half century anniversary.

The school first opened its doors in 1965.

On Saturday April 18, from 2pm to 6 pm, Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre will mark the occasion with videos of previous school holiday trips, music performances by students, and the appearance of former students, including the Gooches, and even some members of staff.

An event spokesman said: "A large number of former pupils have indicated they will attend and it will be a great day to catch up with old friends."

"Amongst those celebrating will be the Gooch family from Newent who span 44 years in the Community School and total of 71 years if you include the grammar school beforehand.

"This is an astonishing achievement to celebrate and no doubt more families with similar records will appear on the day."

There will be displays school and house photographs on view throughout the school.

The event will be followed by a party in the George Hotel, Church Street.

This celebration is open to all past students and staff.
