LEDBURY'S mayor, Cllr Bob Barnes, believes that taking on the ownership of the town's car parks from Herefordshire Council may be more trouble than it is worth.
And he has pointed to nearby Ross on Wye to make his point.
The idea of taking on Ledbury's town centre car parks, to boost the budget of the town council, has been discussed recently by town councillors.
But Cllr Barnes, speaking last week in meeting in the Market House said: "Ross has handed back all the car parks it was offered by Herefordshire Council.
"The liability was much more than they wanted to take on."
The car parks in Ledbury town centre include St Katherine's, Bridge Street, Bye Street and Lawnside Road, and some could come with a high maintenance bill, following any asset transfer.
Cllr Barnes pointed to the ancient walls that surround St Katherine's car park in particular, sections of which have needed remedial work in recent times.
The cost of re-surfacing the car parks could also hit the town council purse hard.
Cllr Barnes said: "Car parks really are a liability. It is unlikely we would go down that line."
