SPEED monitoring boxes on the Dymock to Newent road have shown that motorists tend to speed along the stretch, but not by by a considerable amount.
The outcome is a blow for Dymock Parish Council, which could like to see the speed limit on the 40mph stretch reduced to 30mph.
Parish clerk, Sue Simkin has reported that an average speed of 46mph was recorded, and added: "This speed does not allow the reduction of the speed limit to 30mph".
She added: "Our MP, Mark Harper has already written to the Minister for Transport, explaining how Government guidelines are holding back our efforts to improve road safety."
Traffic speeds along the road will be monitored again, in the New Year.
