ENGLAND and Warwickshire cricketer Ian Bell MBE will be an official starter at this year’s Bupa Great Birmingham Run on Sunday (October 19).

The 32-year-old batsman, a patron of Midlands-based charity Acorns Children’s Hospice, will join double Commonwealth gold medallist, triathlete Jodie Stimpson, to start the Midlands biggest half-marathon.

David Strudley, chief executive of Acorns Children’s Hospice, said: “The Bupa Great Birmingham Run is a hugely significant fundraising event for Acorns and the funds raised help us greatly in our work supporting life-limited children and their families.

“This year’s event will hold a special significance as our patron, Ian Bell, starts off the runners on the day.

“I would like to wish all the participants the very best of luck, especially over 260 runners helping to raise vital funds for our charity.”

David Hart, communications director for the Bupa Great Birmingham Run, added: “Ian is not only a great player but a fine ambassador for both the sport and city of Birmingham.

“We’re delighted he is able to join us for what promises to be the biggest and best ever Midlands half-marathon.”

A field of more than 20,000 runners will complete the 13.1-mile race on Sunday.

Celebrities including BBC Inside Out presenter Andy Akinwolere, Hollyoaks star Mandip Gill and Team England Commonwealth bronze medallist, table tennis player Kelly Sibley, will take part.
