LANDLOCKED Hereford has little in the way of aquatic life, but a short drive will see you eye-to-eye with a wealth of marine life, including sharks, squid and giant sea turtles - in the heart of Birmingham.

Spectacular displays from touch pools to walkthrough underwater tunnels provide breathtaking, close encounters with everything from humble shrimps and starfish to seahorses, sharks and rays. The Turtle Sanctuary, a new feature for 2008, houses a number of critically endangered species and joins in the international efforts to generate captive bred stock for future re-introduction programmes.

Birmingham SeaLife Centre, The National Sea Life Centre, The Waters Edge, Brindleyplace, Birmingham. B1 2HL. Call 0121 643 6777 or visit sealifeeurope.com for opening times and prices.
