Relief as flood defences hold

HEREFORD escaped flooding at the weekend - thanks to the city's new flood defences.

The Environment Agency said heavy rain last week saw the River Wye rising to a higher level than in July, which saw some of the worst flooding of recent times.

Although there was some flooding across the county, the agency says Hereford escaped thanks to the defences.

Martin Watkins, from the agency, said the river level rose to a point high enough for floodwater to have affected the Belmont roundabout and the Asda supermarket site.

"With Herefordshire Council, the agency's construction team worked around the clock to plug the danger points until the flood threat receded," he said.
