Ross-on-Wye

Ross-on-Wye BIG BARBECUE – The Ross Foyer Big BBQ saw more than 40 visitors to the courtyard of December House, including the local police and the mayor.

There was lots of food and cake cooked by the residents, a wishing tree, face painting, hula hoop competition, live music, book stall, lucky dip and table tennis. The day was organised by the residents of the Foyer who wanted to volunteer to put on an event to meet their neighbours, invite family and friends and increase the community spirit in Ross. They applied to the Vproject for money to set up the day.

The Herefordshire SHYPP (Supported Housing for Young People Project) is a part of Kemble Housing Association and offers accommodation, support and training to young people aged 16 to 25. The service aims to encourage young people towards independent living and provide support with basic life skills, access to qualifications, volunteering and employment. SHYPP works with more than 200 young people every week, many supported in their own homes in the community.

SHYPP also operates three Foyers across the county, in Hereford, Leominster and Ross. The Foyers provide much needed accommodation and support for young people in the county. SHYPP is also committed to the prevention of homelessness and runs a programme in local schools to highlight the risks of being homeless.

This runs in conjunction with the duty and crisis team who offer free advice, support and possible access to nightstop accommodation to anyone who is, or is at risk of being, homeless.

TASTER DAYS – Two holiday fun events are being arranged for children aged five-11 at Christ Church, Edde Cross Street, on Tuesdays, August 18 and 25, from 10am-2.30pm. These are taster days as the church is planning to start a children’s midweek weekly club for younger children with the aim of encouraging music and drama. It is planned that the new organisation will start on September 8, from 3.45pm- 5pm. The taster days will give the children a flavour of what’s in store – fun in creating music, singing, mime and drama. Each of the taster days will finish with a small presentation of what the children have achieved. More information is available from Philip Dazeley on 01989 567810. The cost is £3 each or £5 for both days. Numbers are limited and booking is necessary.
