GARDEN COFFEE MORNING – For the last five years, Patty and John Vaughan from Norton, with help from their family and friends, have been holding a coffee morning in their garden in memory of their son Sam who died in an accident in 2003 when he was just 16 years old. In five years, the events have raised over £5,000 for the Air Ambulance. This year, the coffee morning was held on May 17, and Patty and John have just donated the proceeds of £1,038 to the Wales and County Air Ambulances, both charities receiving £519. Plans for next year’s coffee morning are already being made.
HOTEL CHARITY EVENT – The Knighton Hotel car park will be the venue for the charity ‘Fun in the Sun Day’, taking place on Sunday, July 27, from noon to 5pm. There will be bouncy castles, face painting, a barbecue, car boot (£5 per table), farmers’ market ( £10 per table), Lady DJ with music all afternoon and much more. Proceeds will go to Knighton under-5s and Whitton Playgroup. To book a boot or table, call Dee on 01547 520530.
SIXTY YEARS OF THE NHS – Knighton Hospital staff, members of the League of Friends, patients, residents of Cottage View and guests celebrated 60 years of the NHS with strawberry teas and other refreshments. There was a large display of photos and information about the hospital past and present for everyone to look at and a big cake provided by Powys LHB for everyone to enjoy.
MONAUGHTY YOUTH CLUB – Before the annual meeting of the Monaughty Circle Youth Club, a presentation was made to Stuart and Lyn Pettifer, who have been voluntary youth workers for nearly nine years. The club is in its 21st year and caters for youngsters from 10 years old. It is run by volunteers and they meet once a month at Llangunllo Village Hall. Officers elected at the meeting were: chairperson Debbie Lewis, vice-chair Jayne Lewis, secretary Sahrah Wilding, treasurer Caroline Breeze and fundraising co-ordinator Lynne Luke.
PLAYDAYS NURSERY – An open day was held to introduce parents and visitors to the staff and see the facilities on offer. Hannah Lewis, owner of the nursery, said: “There was a good turn-out and it was really nice to see so many people interested in the nursery.”
SNOOKER CLUB – Two excellent snooker tables are awaiting anyone who would like to play snooker at the Community Centre, which is open most days from 9am to 5pm, and in the evening, Monday to Thursday, from 7pm to 10pm.

TREF-Y-CLAWDD WI – The speaker at the July meeting was ranger Amy Duffill, who gave an illustrated talk on her trip to the Jiingi Jamboree in Sweden. Sue Jones judged the three homemade scones competition, won by Joan Beattie with Diane Edwards second, and Margaret Johnson third. The trip to Ten Green Bottles is on Sunday; family and friends are welcome. More details from Julia Roberts. The garden party is on Wednesday, July 30, at the home of Rosemary Eyke, more details to follow. The next meeting is on September 3, in the school room of Norton Street Baptist Church at 7.30pm.
STRAWBERRY TEA – This will take place on Saturday at 3pm, in Knucklas Baptist Chapel. There will also be a cake stall.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE – At about 1.50am, on July 5, two premises in Broad Street were damaged. The door of number 7 appears to have been forced open, and the second premises to be damaged was the Costcutter bakery shop where a window was smashed. It is believed that the same group is responsible for both. Also on July 6, around 1am, residents in Hereford Street, Presteigne, were disturbed by a young male smashing three small panes of glass as he walked past. He was in the company of two others and walked off towards John Beddoes School. Anyone with information, please call PC 407 Cowan at Knighton Police Station on 0845 330200 or by email: knightonnpt@dyfed-powys.pnn.police.uk FIRST BEER FESTIVAL – Colin Triplow and Lorna Woods, landlord and landlady of The Royal George at Lingen, near Presteigne, will be putting on what is believed to be the village’s first ever beer festival with a barbecue. It will take place from Friday to Sunday, July 11 to 13, during normal opening hours (Thursday to Sunday from noon to 3pm, evenings from 6pm to 11pm, except Sunday, 7pm to 10.30pm). Twelve real ales will be on offer for this event.
CARNIVAL PRINCESS – The carnival princess for 2008 is 17-year-old Kirsty Scotford. Kirsty has always lived in Knighton and attended Knighton Primary School before John Beddoes School in Presteigne. She is currently coming to the end of her first year at Ludlow College doing a child care diploma. Kirsty’s hobbies include music, going out, fashion and watching TV.
RADNOR VALLEY – Radnor Valley Mothers and Toddlers Group held a teddy bear’s picnic indoors due to bad weather. All enjoyed sandwiches, fruit, vegetables and cakes. To raise funds, there were two guess-the-name-of-the-teddy competitions, the winners were David Hughes from Nash and Rhodri Davies from Knighton, and £200 was raised.

PRIMARY SCHOOL AWARD – Knighton Primary School has been awarded the bonus £100 prize for creating the best artwork from the old directories collected for recycling in this year’s local challenge. Pupils at the school made a clock tower out of them. The Yellow Woods Challenge’s mascot Kirk visited the school to present the award.
