MAYOR’S TEA PARTY - Knighton Mayor, Councillor Ken Fincham, with the support of Knighton town council organised a senior citizens’ tea party on Sunday, April 20, at Knighton Community Centre. Entertainment was provided by Knighton Church in Wales Primary School Choir and Knighton Teme Spirits followed by afternoon tea.
KNIGHTON AND DISTRICT TWINNING ASSOCIATION -The next committee meeting, open to anyone interested in the project, will take place in the snug bar of Knighton Hotel at 7.30pm on Monday, May 19. For details, call the secretary on 01547 528950.
QUIZ NIGHT - The Knighton Hotel will be the host for another quiz to raise money for Knighton Show and Carnival committee. The quiz will be held on Thursday, May 1, starting at 7.30pm. Entry is £10 for a team of four.
MACMILLAN AGM - The annual meeting of the Knighton Macmillan Cancer Support Group took place at the Knighton Hotel by kind permission of Mr Peter Carroll, the manager. Sponsor forms for the Macmillan Mile on May 20 are available in local shops or by ringing 528295.
PLANT SALE - St Edward’s Church plant sale and coffee morning raised £452 for the church restoration fund. Competition winners were Neil Warrington, Jean Burgoyne, Nigel, Doreen Gammon, U Cements and J Morgan. Donations for the fund can be given to a church warden or left at the vicarage.
COMMUNITY ARTS PARTNERSHIP - The first Knighton Community Arts Partnership AGM will be held at 7pm on Tuesday, April 29, at the Knighton Hotel. Any nominations for chairman, vice-chairman, secretary and treasurer to the secretary on 01547 529530.
YOUTH PROJECT - Members of Knighton’s Youth project have received three certificates for their success in a healthy eating and fitness course. LIFE DEACON FOR ELLIS EVANS - Mr Ellis Evans and his wife Freda have been members of Knighton Baptist Church since the 1950s. Ellis, now 88 years old, has been a church trustee since 1970, and a Deacon since 1973. He was also treasurer from 1977 to 1997. To thank Ellis for all his years’ service he was made a life deacon at a special lunch following the church anniversary last Sunday.
BAND PRESENTATION AND CONCERT - Knighton Town Silver Band held a successful concert at the Community Centre in Knighton on Saturday, April 12. Guest artists for the evening were Ludlow Male Voice Choir under their musical director Maggie Davies accompanied by pianist Cathy O’Rourke. The Rose Bowl presented by the musical director was this year won by Ann Kilby. This was in recognition of her hard work and commitment which she displayed working towards the recent contest. A raffle was conducted during the interval with the major trolley dash prize at Harry Tuffin’s, Knighton supermarket, being won by Peter Reynolds.
BEGUILDY COUNCIL - Six members of Beguildy and Knucklas Community Council with over 100 years’ experience between them retired at the last council meeting. They were John Powis, 30 years, William Corbett, 30 years, and Idris Lloyd who has been the council clerk for the last 43 years and a councillor for the last nine years. He has retired as a councillor but is continuing as the clerk. Harold Lewis has been on the council for about 25 years, Bernard Morris for 21 years and Colin Evans for five years.
MACMILLAN MILE - The annual sponsored walk to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support will be on Tuesday, May 20, starting at 7pm from the Knighton Hotel car park. The event, which is part of the Macmillan Walk Wonders 2008, is organised by members of the Knighton support group. Sponsor forms are available from the bookshop and Spar in Knighton as well as the library.
FARMERS’ AND CRAFT MARKET - Knighton farmers’ and craft market will be held at Knighton Community Centre on Saturday from 9.30am to 1pm. There will be a large selection of products for sale including fresh flowers, meats and craft items.
FELINDRE WI - The next meeting will be held on May 7, when the speaker will be Tessa Gavin, on the subject of ‘My Fledgling Design Career’. The resolutions will also be discussed at this meeting – new members are always welcome.
