KNIGHTON AND DISTRICT TOURISM GROUP – Thank you, Knighton. That was the message from the organisers of Knighton’s first Serendipity Festival which was a great success. Without local support the festival could not have happened. Delighted by this success, the Knighton and District Tourism Group is ready to think about Knighton Serendipity Festival 2009. Thanks to the generous donations from the Laura Ashley Foundation, Powys County Council and Knighton Town Council there is money to start us off next year. The success of the festival was the result of individual groups and their special efforts. The East Radnorshire Ramblers provided a marvellous schedule of walks and Cecil Rudge’s history walks were a sensation. The opening concert with the Llanfair Singers and the Knighton school choir was well attended and all agreed that the local school choir was exceptional. Councillor Harris presented a surprise Gospel singer who created much excitement. The Knighton Town silver band picnic and concert and the Living Willow Theatre’s Macbeth picnic both took place in Pinner’s Hole. This natural amphitheatre proved to be a magical venue for a clement summer’s night. The local young musicians’ concert was a sell-out, and the finale on Sunday with the Lunar Saxophone Quartet was a brilliant and stimulating evening. This year has been a learning curve for all concerned. Several events were saved from disaster by Andy Hazell’s generosity with his electricity supply. The Bygone Ages Fair was rescued by the indefatigable energy of Julia and John Llewellyn Roberts at the Tower House Gallery. The Tourism Group needs new members and supporters for next year’s ideas and input. Although this year’s committee has learnt much, new active members will ensure freshness to the programme. GARDEN COFFEE MORNING – For the last five years, Patty and John Vaughan from Norton, with help from their family and friends, have been holding a coffee morning in their garden in memory of their son Sam who died in an accident in 2003 when he was just 16 years old. In five years, the events have raised over £5,000 for the Air Ambulance. This year, the coffee morning was held on May 17, and Patty and John have just donated the proceeds of £1,038 to the Wales and County Air Ambulances, both charities receiving £519. Plans for next year’s coffee morning are already being made.
