MEDIEVAL PAGEANT – Held in and around Ewyas Harold Castle, the pageant was a great success, despite the showery weather, with a falconry display, maypole dancing, craft workshops, a chance to try archery skills, skittles and, best of all, a battle for the castle. There was plenty to eat and drink with a hog roast and local ice cream supplied by Rowlestone Farmhouse, washed down with local Gwatkins cider. All proceeds went to local charities.
YOUTH CRICKET – Playing for the first time this year is Ewyas Harold youth cricket team coached by Dennis Elkerton and, in a recent match played on their home ground, they managed to beat Wormelow youth cricket club.
WILD PLAY – The nature rangers have organised a fun day on Ewyas Harold Common to celebrate national play day today (Thursday) from 10.30am to 12.30pm. This group promotes outdoor open access and child-led activities for children aged from four to 13. They are not a childcare facility so parents and families are also welcome to come along. Meet at the cattle grid, Vicarage Close side of the common, for a morning of trails and earth walks. Bring a picnic lunch and go butterfly spotting in the afternoon in the Ewyas Harold Meadows, a large patch of flowery meadow situated alongside Ewyas Harold Common.
BARBECUE – Tomorrow (Friday) at 7pm, there will be a barbecue in Bacton Village Centre with a raffle and various other stalls. Admission £7 with children under 12 eating free if accompanied by a paying adult.
SUMMER ORGAN MUSIC – The second of the coffee concerts in Dore Abbey will be held on Saturday with guest organist Clive Osgood, director of music at St Bartholomew’s, Hazlemere.
Coffee is served from 11am with the music starting at 11.30am.
ALL AGE SERVICE – Sunday will be the next informal service at 10am in St Michael’s Church, so why not come along and join the congregation?
CHURCH OPEN AFTERNOON – Once again St James’ Church, Llangua, will be open from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday, when you are warmly invited to visit this simple historic church in its peaceful surroundings alongside the River Monnow and after you have looked around, you can enjoy a cream cake and a cup of tea.
WI – When our speaker could not attend our July meeting we were disappointed and then Mary Sinclair Powell agreed to come instead. She is a town guide in Ross-on-Wye and took us on an historic tour of Ross from Old Market House along Old Gloucester Road without leaving our seats. This month we are going to the home of Ellen Downey, one of our members who regularly travels from Abergavenny to our meetings, for an Edwardian tea.
PACT – On Friday, August 14, at 6pm, in the fire station there will be a meeting which gives everyone the chance to tell organisations about important issues in your area. Make your views known.
