PARISH COUNCIL – The September meeting was held in the Memorial Hall with Councillor Paul Sheen in the chair.

Co-option of councillors: The clerk read out a letter of resignation from Richard Mailes. This means that even with two new co-options there are still three vacancies on the council. Richard Baker and Ben Krige completed their co-option forms for Llancillo and Ewyas Harold parishes respectively. The application of Mr Glyn James was discussed and it was agreed that he should be co-opted as parish councillor for Ewyas Harold at the October meeting.

POST OFFICE CLOSURES – Members were pleased to hear that Ewyas Harold, Pontrilas and Longtown were not on the closure list.

RECREATION GROUND – The problem of dog fouling will be given a high profile report in the next parish newsletter. The quarterly ROSPA report showed no problems with the play equipment.

PARISH NEWSLETTER – Discussion about a possible amalgamation with the CAP newsletter will be delayed until later in the year when the current editor of Ewyas Harold Group Parish newsletter will be present. Meanwhile Councillor E Overstall will discuss possibilities with the CAP editor. The next meeting of the council will be held at Rowlestone Village Hall on October 7 at 7.30pm.

MEMORIAL HALL – The new season of Flicks in the Sticks starts tomorrow (Friday) with a showing of Happy-Go-Lucky (15). The film starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £3.50 for adults, under-16s, £2.50.

COMMUNITY ACCESS POINT – This closed in August but has re-opened in September. People are urged to use this facility for help with computers and the Internet. Children can use WII or karaoke machines or music equipment. Opening times are 6.30pm to 9pm on Tuesday, 4pm to 6.30pm on Saturday.

RIDE AND STRIDE – Church members will be cycling around the local churches on Saturday, and sponsor forms are in St Michael’s Church.

CHORAL WORKSHOP – The annual choral workshop with Paul Spicer will be on Saturday from 10am. This year it will be Beethoven’s Mass in C and there is still time to book a place. Please call 01981 241458 after 7pm. The singers of the day will perform in concert at 5pm when everyone is welcome, tickets £3 on the door.

h.ART – Rob Ritchie of Trappe Gallery is participating in h.Art 08 and the gallery is open from 10.30am to 5.30pm (Sundays from noon), from September 13 to 21. Pop in for a coffee and view a new range of prints, cards and something completely different in his still-life originals. The gallery is located in Ewyas Harold on the corner of Elm Green Road/Abbeyore Road.

ART CLUB – Kilpeck Art Club is holding an exhibition in Kilpeck Hall from 10.30am to 5.30pm on Saturday and Sunday, September 17 to 19, and Sunday, September 21. There will be many items of work for sale and also light refreshments.

SUMMER CONCERT – There will be a late summer concert at St Mary’s Church, Walterstone, on Saturday at 7.30pm. Tickets at £5 (including light refreshments) are available from churchwardens or on the door.

ALL-AGE SERVICE – The next one of these increasingly popular services is on Sunday at 10am in St Michael’s Church. All are welcome, especially volunteers to give welcome, read from the Bible, lead prayers, be dramatic, take collection or just join in. Much-needed refreshments afterwards.

EWYAS HAROLD HISTORY & ARCHAEOLOGY GROUP – Graham Sprackling will lead a walk from Ewyas Harold to Dulas, looking at the landscape archaeology, discussing field names and evidence of links to the past. Please come along and join in at 2pm on Sunday on the recreation ground.

CAR BOOT FOR WATERAID –The Walterstone Wateraid project is holding a car boot at the Park Hotel on Sunday from 2pm. Refreshments will be available and there will be a marquee if it is raining.

JAZZ CONCERT – Mark Latimer’s Jazz Trio will be performing at Dore Abbey on Sunday at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £12 from Friends of Dore Abbey.

BENEFICE PRAYER GROUP – The group next meets at the Rectory at noon next Tuesday, lasting about 45 minutes. All are welcome, you can join in the prayers in silence or out loud. Do please come to support the prayers for our benefice, for suffering, for the world and the church.

Unified parishes MEETING – On Thursday, September 18, at 7pm in St Michael’s Hall there will be an extraordinary parochial churches meeting to discuss the unification of the parishes of Dulas and Ewyas Harold.

20 YEARS INSIDE THE SAS – There will be an evening with Pete Scholey on Friday, September 19, at 7.30pm in the Memorial Hall when he will be talking about his time in the Regiment and his books The Joker and SAS Heroes: Remarkable Soldiers, Extraordinary Men with a slideshow. Admission is £5 and includes a glass of wine and refreshments. Tickets from Mailes butchers.
