pavilion, for the past eight years, but have decided to step aside now their own children have become too old to attend. The club held a surprise party for them and presented them with cases of
wine. Club chairman Benna Waites said they had made a tremendous contribution to the youth of the Golden Valley. “We all owe Gareth and Steve a huge debt
of gratitude for their enthusiasm and dedication,”

PETER Walwin – sculptor, woodcarver and fine furniture-maker – told members of his widening interest in threedimensional art. From an engineering background, he had gone to a specialist college
course in High Wycombe where he carved a wide range of chairs, table legs, doorways and mirror frames. His broader interests encompassed many wild life forms such as bears, eagles and owls. Each
year he competes at Westonbirt Arboretum with other sculptors using chainsaws to produce large-scale works from big tree trunks. Peter displayed a number of his carvings plus the appropriate tools,
the designs and the different types of wood which he used.

MICHAEL Watkins of Shrewsbury is showing the young sea cadets of Hereford what can be achieved with dedication and commitment and hard training. Michael, aged
26, takes part in many runs, bike rides and parachute jumps and in March completed an Ultra 30 Wye run in Herefordshire. He is now training for the Lakeland 100 run which he is taking part in from
5.30pm on July 23. The tour is a 100-mile circuit visiting many of the most picturesque valleys and dales that radiate out from the high central fells like the spokes of a wheel and includes in the
region of 6,300m of ascent. In some places the paths have all but disappeared into the mire. The organisers allow up to 40 hours for competitors to complete the full course but Michael is aiming to
finish in less than 24 hours.
