Wye Valley Art Society

PETER Walwin – sculptor, woodcarver and fine furniture-maker – told members of his widening interest in threedimensional art. From an engineering background, he had gone to a specialist college course in High Wycombe where he carved a wide range of chairs, table legs, doorways and mirror frames. His broader interests encompassed many wild life forms such as bears, eagles and owls. Each year he competes at Westonbirt Arboretum with other sculptors using chainsaws to produce large-scale works from big tree trunks. Peter displayed a number of his carvings plus the appropriate tools, the designs and the different types of wood which he used.

Members very much enjoyed sharing his experiences. The next meeting of the society will be on August 10, at the Old Court Hotel, Whitchurch when members will display their entries for a competition entitled “street fashion”.
