THE celebration of John Venn’s life took place at his graveside with members of the Hereford Society for Aiding the Industrious, which he founded, and others from St Peter’s and St James’ churches. Friends joined with Rev Jonathan Coore to remember his work in the parish for the spiritual and physical well-being of the poor. The neglected grave is also the resting place of his sister Emelia who helped in his work all her life and his Aunt Jane, who brought them up. Those attending were saddened by its neglected appearance and efforts were made to tidy it up. Yellow ribbons were tied to the rails to show that the Venns have not been forgotten It is hoped that funds will be found to refurbish the grave as a memorial to one of the city’s great benefactors.
