THERE were two very successful meetings in April. The archive film evening was well received with the Lion Ballroom full. It is remarkable the amount of change that has taken place in the county even since relatively recent events such as the national ploughing championships in Ross-on-Wye in the 1960s.This is particularly noticeable with dress, with many of those attending displaying tweed suits and highly polished boots with gaiters rarely, if ever, seen now. It is evident that archive film of this type retains its popularity. We will continue to research suitable material for public display. If you know of a film or DVD available or have any requests, do let Barrie Morgan know on 01568 780761.

Following the films, on the Monday evening, Peter Holliday presented Leominster in 1808. The turn-out was unprecedented (over 60 non-members in attendance) and unfortunately we had to turn people away. We are exploring a more flexible use of the space available to ensure that this does not happen again. I am sure many of us had some basic knowledge of the Enclosure Acts with the poor being dispossessed and the land put into tenancies and cultivated. However, the ways in which the monies were invested by the borough was a revelation. We had extensive improvements to Leominster in many areas including town planning and sanitation. Many of us were tantilised by the presentation of detailed maps relating the enclosed areas to the north of Leominster. We hope that Peter can be persuaded to come again next year.

May 12, 7.30pm, is the next date for your diary. Do note that the meeting is not in the Talbot. We are all invited to Leominster Folk Museum in Etnam Street. The museum has a wealth of local artefacts with staff available to advise on their significance. See you there. If you have not already done so, please put June 9 in your diaries. During the Leominster Festival, Dr Roy Strong is giving a lecture entitled ‘Saving the Country Church’. Numbers are limited. Call 01568 780761 to pre-book.
