Okay, just a slight exaggeration, but last week the faithful few who participate weekly in the Butterfly Transect on the Merbach sited a total of 40 butterflies. There were 18 Ringlets, 15 Meadow Brown, 3 Gatekeepers, 3 Large White and 1 Small White. Three Speckled Wood were spotted prior to the start of the Transect and could not be counted. What a tease!

A full house had its spines tingled by Cherry, Jean and Vicky's anthem, 'Pie Jesu' for last month's Evensong. Leader Mick took to the organ to accompany them. Ange led the hymns and the main service. Visitors to the area were thrilled to find tradition in a lovely old country church. The August Evensong service on Sunday, August 3rd, will draw on favourites 'All Hail The Power of Jesu's Many Crowns', ending with 'How great Thou Art'.

No, not lyrics from a famous old song, but the first of hopefully, many initiatives by the newly formed "Friends of St Andrew's" whose purpose is to raise funds for St Andrew's Church. We are collecting scrap metal monthly. Anything from ancient combines (farmers!), rusty car exhausts (some of us!) to the contents of the deepest corners of our sheds and gardens (all of us!). We have a 2 tonne trailer and can pick up large items or quantities. small items can be dumped at Graham's at 'The Glebe'. The high scrap prices for quantity at the moment make this a worthy effort. Any metal: steel, iron , aluminium, copper, brass including plumbing, scrap, batteries, etc. All profits to St Andrew's Church. Ring Graham on 01981 500 635.

VILLAGE STORE – The village of Bishopswood is witnessing the end to over 40 years of groceries and fuel from Monica and Lyndon Edmunds and welcoming Angharad Wrigley as the new owner of Bishopswood Village Stores. For nearly half a century, Wyeside Station (as was) has loyally served the community with a range of goods and services, but with a well-earned retirement coming, the time has come for Angharad to expand on her existing shop in Redbrook, Redbrook Village Stores. A farewell and hello party with live jazz band, open to all, will take place on Sunday at 4pm, and will give customers chance to see the newly extended and renovated shop.

SOAP BOX DERBY – On Sunday, July 13, at the Richards Castle soap box derby, a legend was made. Ian Astley from Bishopstone who crashed at last year’s meeting (which was featured on BBC television) went to the meeting saying that he would break the track record set by himself two years ago. On each of three runs down the hill he succeeded. He smashed the time from 43.40 seconds down to 40.678 seconds and became the undisputed ‘king of the hill’. His average speed was officially given at over 48kmph; his final speed going through the finish line is not known and can only be guessed at. The final result of the soap box derby (with fastest recorded time) was BRM (Bishopstone) with 40.678 seconds followed by Formula Gravity from Suffolk (42.464 seconds), and Bishy Boys (Bishopstone) third with 43.111 seconds.
