Bishopstone

12:40pm Friday 10th October 2008

CHOIR EVENING – St Lawrence Church, Bishopstone, was full to capacity on Friday, October 3, when it echoed to the Hereford Rail Male Voice Choir who gave a performance of distinction by singing songs from around the world. One number performed entirely in Welsh contained a superbly sung solo. What gave the evening a touch of piquancy was the two Stanley Holloway monologues delivered by Mr Ray Bonnington and the humorous interlude provided by Mr Tony Bailey. This was the choir’s first performance under the direction of their new musical director and it sent out all the right vibes for a bright future. The Friends of Bishopstone Church (who organised the evening) wish to thank all who supported the event, especially those who gave very generous donations to raise the total of £609 profit.

Wild about mushrooms and toadstools on Merbach Hill Common, Bredwardine

Wild about mushrooms and toadstools on Merbach Hill Common, Bredwardine

9:27am Friday 10th October 2008

Autumn is a great time of year to hunt for many of the hundreds of species of fungi found in Herefordshire. So, on a cool misty morning this week, Sheila Spence, a local field mycologist, led a fungus foray on Merbach Hill Common. At the start of the day, an enthusiastic group of local people listened to Sheila’s captivating description of the world of mushrooms and toadstools. But which of the many fascinating and beautiful species of fungi would they find? Would they stumble across death caps, stinkhorns and ugly milk-caps? Or would the species growing on Merbach Hill be more appealing?

Bredwardine & Brobury Historical Society

9:21am Friday 10th October 2008

Just a reminder! The Bredwardine & Brobury Historical Society will meet on Thursday, October 16th at 7.30pm at the Damsons. Our new project will be to identify all those whose names are inscribed on the War Memorial, their family and other local connections and their service records in the two World Wars. When the Memorial was erected, everyone in the village would have known who they were. With the palse of time and memory the sparse inscriptions convey little information. it is hoped that the results may eventually form part of a booklet about Bredwardine. The society would be very pleased to hear from any relatives of these servicemen who may have memntoes or other information. Please contact Sheila or Alan. The Society also welcomes anyone who would like to be a member of this informal group (no subscription so far!).
