A VISIT from a member of the Royalty came like a refreshing shot in the arm for members of Hereford and District Multiple Sclerosis Society.

They feel the work of the society often goes unsung, although it is always greatly appreciated by those who benefit from it.

When HRH Princess Alexandra called in, she was told how much of a lifeline the society offered to those with the disease and they were delighted with her royal seal of approval.

They hope her visit will help build up a greater awareness of MS in Herefordshire.

More than 300 people in the county are affected by MS and many of them benefit from the efforts of dedicated volunteers.

The society’s chairman, John Pitt, of Bromyard, whose wife Marjorie has MS, said it cost up to £35,000 a year to pay for the services.

Last year, they successfully lobbied Herefordshire PCT to provide a full-time community nurse, Dell Thomas, who has already made a huge impact.

Yet another initiative is the setting up of a carers listening helpline so that carers can talk to someone who understands and is happy to listen or give advice.

Special wellbeing classes have also been arranged with Halo leisure centres in the county for exercise and social get-togethers.

One of the society’s biggest assets is a £30,000 minibus used by volunteer driver team leader Keith Martin and his band of helpers to take members, many in wheelchairs, for treatment and to social events.

Anne Reid-Smith, who was diagnosed with MS in 1987, said: “The MS Society is a real lifeline for people like me. “I only have to pick up the phone and there is always someone there to help me.” Anyone wishing to know more about the society can call John Pitt on 01885 489410.
