The curlew, or Numenius arquata, is Britain’s largest wader and is named after its evocative “courlee” call. Traditionally it was a bird of the moorland and marsh but it spread into lower-lying pastures and heaths during the 20th century. Curlew numbers decreased after the 1950s, probably because of drainage and changes in farming, including earlier cutting of hay. The curlew feeds on insects, worms and other small animals, and also berries and seeds. It pecks on the surface of the ground and probes into damp soil and grass tussocks with its long curved bill. Both parents care for the eggs and chicks, which leave the nest soon after hatching.
