International interests at biggest show of Herefords

THE largest single display of Hereford cattle in Europe was seen at Shewsbury Auction Centre during the annual Calf Show.

The Hereford Cattle Society’s annual show incorporated the National Calf Show.

The event had an international feel with several Danish Hereford breeders attending to support judge Anders Mortensen of Woodlands Herefords, the oldest herd in Denmark, established in 1966. A group of breeders from the Republic of Ireland also attended.

Breed stalwarts D E, E D and A L Jones of Dendor Herefords, Caersws, Powys, won the supreme championship for the second year in a row with 14-month-old heifer champion Dendor 1 Greta.

Shrewsbury Auction Centre manager Nick Hyne, from auctioneers Halls, said: “We are looking forward to hosting an auction of high quality Hereford cattle for the Hereford Cattle Society on May 22, following the success of the inaugural sale in Shrewsbury in 2011.”
