Hereford Market, March 3 Prime hoggs – 1,332: Increased entry but improved trade with an SQQ of 190.2p and an overall average of 183.3p. Heavier hoggs a much improved trade to £96.

Overall ave 183.3p/kg, top price £96 for hoggs grading 65kg.

Store hoggs – 1,525: The larger entry were generally better sorts which sold to a keen trade.

Bunches of stronger hoggs sold from £72 to £84.80 for Suffolk crosses. Longer keeping lambs all sold well, with many from £64 to £73. Plainer hoggs varied in size with the bigger sorts from £50 to £61 and others from £32 to £48.

Ram hoggs sold from £37-£75.20.

Ewes with lambs: The larger entry of couples, 88 ewes and 129 lambs met with a varied trade.

Topping at £190 was a bunch of two-year-old black faced ewes with twins at foot. Other double couples sold from £109 to £137.

Those with one-and-a-half lambs at foot topped at £156 for full mouth ewes with good shaped lambs. Several single couples on offer sold to £130 for four-year-old mules with other, plainer ewes from £85 to £112.

In-lamb ewes – 112: The smaller entry sold to a firm trade on the dispersal of Texel cross ewes scanned in lamb to a Texel ram and due from March 28. They sold to £132 for yearling and two-yearolds, with four and five-year-olds from £83 to £125. Stronger aged ewes sold from £114 to £125. Inlamb hoggs sold to less interest with strong Suffolk cross mules from £98 to £102, with North Country mule hoggs at £70.

Cull ewes – 835: A very pleasing entry and marvellous trade. Ewes up to £132 for a pen from M/s G G Davies, Whitehouse, Llanvihangel Crucorney. Any amount of ewes in excess of £100/head. Rams were also a good trade with a top of £110/head for two rams from M/s P R Powell, Willox Bridge, Allensmore. Overall ave £71.38, Suffolks to £132, Continentals £129, North Country mules £105, Welsh mules £91.50, Welsh £76.20, cull rams £110.

Pigs – 127: Poorer trade especially on pork-type pigs. Good quality weaners in demand but a poor trade for second quality sows and boars. Weaners (white) £15-£26, (coloured) £10, stores (white) £22- £35, (coloured £12-£25, porkers (white) £55-£60, cutters (white) £71, (coloured) £50, fat sows £96- £162, boars £70-£118.

Kington Market, March 4 AN entry of 2,590 sheep sold to a good trade. Hoggets met a good trade but lambs between 45 and 47.5kg would still be the most difficult to sell. There were 2,300 hoggets for sale, which averaged 1.89p/kg. Well-bred and meated hoggets between 37 and 43kg, the export specification, would be at market premiums. Heavier hoggets in excess of 48kg were also in good demand. All hoggets forward averaged 1.89p/kg with a top of 200p/kg. Hoggets sold to a top of £96.50 per head.

There was a good entry of 290 cull ewes selling again to a tremendous trade. The ewes sold to a top of £116 and to average £74.80 per ewe, tups sold to £86.50 and to average £70, weathers sold to £65 and to average £60.

Ross Market, March 1 Clean cattle – 185: A good entry for the Green Market met another strong trade. Again the entry was highly variable, however best cattle still sold well with steers peaking at 180p and heifers 188p. Steers: Top price per kg 180p, from D E and S J Cheacker, Bristol; Top price per head, £1,211.25 from G E Phillips and Son, Raglan. Heifers: Top price per kg 188p, from D E and S J Cheacker, Bristol; Top price per head, £1,224.38 from the same vendor. OTMS – 87: Another very fast trade from start to finish with everything in demand. Beef cows topped at 136p, black and whites 114p. Overage clean, like the cows, a fast trade. Cull bulls to 137p and 127p and £1,372.53 in the lump. Cows topped at £1,162.83 with several others over £1,000. Hoggets – 1,566: An increased entry met an excellent trade. Again, export hoggs were in keenest demand with plenty of pens over 200p to a top of 238p. Heavy hoggs also in keen demand, topping at £100. Overall average 192.8p. SQQ average 196p. Top price per kg, 238p from Miss D Lang. Top price per head, £100 from same vendor. Cull ewes – 261: Reduced entry met outstanding trade. Plenty of ewes over £100 to a top of £130. Overall £88.71. Ross Market, March 8 Clean cattle – 244: A good entry met another similar trade. Best cattle were easiest sold, topping at 180p. A good trade on heavier cattle with several over £1,200. Steers: Top price per kg, 180p for an entry from E L Rees, Awre; Top price per head, £1,294.92 for an entry from G E Phillips and Son. Overall ave 151p. Heifers: Top price per kg, 166p for an entry from J P Price, Kingsland; Top price per head, £1,105.20 from the same vendor. Overall ave 148p. OTMS – 103: 30-48 month cattle a fast trade, topping at 160p. Cows an excellent trade. Best beef cows to 147p, best black and whites 119p, all cows wanted. Old bulls to 120p. Overall ave for cows 110p. Hoggets – 1,645: A slightly increased entry and fast trade. Well bred export hogs sold at a real premium. Again plenty of pens selling from 195p to 213p. Top price per kg, 213p for an entry from Mrs Mitchell; Top price per head, £95 for an entry from DRE and J Parry. Overall ave 187p. SQQ 192p. Cull ewes – 402: Good entry of ewes met excellent trade. Plenty of ewes over £100 to a top of £126.50 for a full pen of ewes from Mrs A Lewis, Much Birch. The ewes averaged £80.21, which would include several hill type and plain ewes. Store cattle – 260: A reasonable entry met another very fast trade with grazing cattle exceptionally well sold.

Fewer strong sorts on offer, with steers topping at £910 and heifers £875. Steers averaged 163p and heifers 156p. Leading prices: Steers: 670kg £910; 460kg £848; 480kg £795; 445kg £760; 410kg £700; 380kg £680; 370kg £720; 335kg £680. Heifers: 560kg £875; 540kg £828; 470kg £735; 430kg £688; 300kg £525; 245kg £450.
