Kington Primestock Sale February 25

MCCARTNEYS of Kington reports a good entry of 1,750 sheep, which sold to a good trade and had marginally increased during the week. The hoggets on offer met a good trade on the week but lambs between 45 and 47.5kg would be the most difficult to sell on the day. There were 1,500 hoggets forward for sale which averaged 190p/kg and were in good demand by the buyers. Wellbred and meated hoggets between 37 and 43kg which met the export spec would be at market premiums. Heavier hoggets in excess of 48 kg were also in better demand. All hoggets forward averaged 1.90ppk with a top of 205p/kg.

Hoggets sold to a top of £95.50 per head.

32kg hoggets from C M and W C Philips made £57, 37kg hoggets from C M and W C Philips made £75.20, 39kg hoggets from O T Lloyd made £77.50, 42kg hoggets from K Tucker made £85, 46kg hoggets from Messrs Hammond made £85.50, 47kg hoggets from T Hughes and Sons made £88.50, 48kg hoggets from B Morris made £86.50, 50kg hoggets from A Layton made £90, 52kg hoggets from E J and R C Price made £91.50, 53kg hoggets from R Sankey and Co made £92.80, 55kg hoggets from K Tucker made £95.50.

There was a good entry of 250 cull ewes selling to a tremendous trade, which had increased over the past week.

Well meated and strong ewes were selling to market premiums. The ewes sold to a top of £130 and to average £79.80 per ewe, Tups sold to £125 and to average £90, Weathers sold to £65 and to average £60. The cull ewes included a large proportion of thinner mule ewes and smaller hill ewes.

Many more cull ewes and hoggets are required at Kington to meet buyer requirements. Kington Market is every Thursday, starting at 11am with lambs.
