A PLOUGHMAN from Pembroke was judged overall champion at Leominster Ploughing Match but it was a family closer to home who stole the show.

A father and two young sons entered the European Reversible class and snapped up first, second and third. Few can remember such a swoop but for the Bowen family, of Clun, it was not unexpected.

Father Colin, aged 46, was the winner in what was considered a trial run for representing England in the European Reversible Championships in the Czech Republic next week.

His son Steve, aged 18, already with successes at the British Championships, came second. In a close third was his brother Allan, at the age of 14 the youngest competitor in the match.

Allan won his first ploughing prize at Teme Valley when he was aged 11.

The overall ploughing champion, out of 82 competitors, was Rhodi George from Pembrokeshire, who won the World Style class.

Three ploughmen qualified for next year’s British Championships: Barry Evans (vintage trailer), Robert Convery (vintage hydraulic) and Phil Meek (classic).
