Young farmers bring home top show trophy

YOUNG farmers in Herefordshire proved their skill in judging carcases and live animals, winning the Lord Lieutenant Cup at the Three Counties Show.

The top award is presented to the county gaining the highest aggregate points and Herefordshire Federation of Young Farmers Clubs won with 9,224, Gloucestershire 8.968 and Worcestershire 8,964.

Herefordshire was neck and neck with Gloucestershire until the carcase and live animal sections were judged but then racked up enough points to take the lead.

Younger members, under the age of 21, just missed out on the Milton Junior Cup, being pipped by Gloucestershire by 130 points.

There will be another big event for young farmers this month when the Herefordshire Federation holds its Junior Field Day on Sunday, July 26 at Upperton Farm, Yazor.

Members from 18 clubs across Herefordshire will be competing in a range of agricultural and domestic skills, handicrafts, stage craft and fun events. The gates open at 10am and entrance is free.
