BOARS with a high libido can earn themselves a certificate to prove their prowess.
Although AI accounts for 75-80 per cent of pig servicing, the boar is still one of the most important animals on pig farms.
Most boars can sire 6,000 piglets in a year using on-farm AI, which means they must be top quality and fertile and have a high libido. Pig-breeding company ACMC has produced a new assurance test for boars when they are sexually mature at about six months to measure this libido.
They are scored one to four, with one being timid and four being an excellent worker.
Semen samples are examined and scored for sperm viability and when all the standards are met, the animal is tagged and issued with a test certificate.
