Kington Show set to bounce back after washout

THE prestigious Kington Show that never took place lost a lot of money last year.

It was cancelled at the last minute when the showground site was waterlogged at the end of an atrocious summer.

“All the arrangements had been made except erecting the marquees and it was harder work deorganising the show than actually running it,” said secretary Clare Edwards.

Sadly it resulted in a “huge” financial loss and organisers are praying for a bumper crowd this year to help recoup some of the money.

The last event in 2007 attracted more than 10,000 people and it is hoped this will be exceeded on Saturday, September 12 when it is held at The Ovals Farm.

The schedules are already available and prove that there is just about everything to provide a happy day out for all the family.

The organisers are aiming for a record entry of livestock. Last year Hereford cattle beat the record for the breed when 120 were expected to compete.

There are 17 different sections for horses covering almost every class, including shire horses, and competitions for coloured ponies and working hunter ponies, unclassified, open for everyone to enter.

There will be newcomers in the sheep section, the French Berrichon and the Badger Faced breeds making their first appearance at the show.

The organisers have decided to continue with poultry classes because of the immense interest when they were introduced in 2007. Leominster MP Bill Wiggin, a poultry enthusiast, will be chief steward in this section.

A lamb carcase competition also proved a hit and will be in the programme again this year, with the carcases later cut up and offered for sale to the public for their deep freezes.

Driving classes will be held in the main ring, including a special commercial class. These can be anything from a hearse, wedding carriage or farm machinery being driven by horses.

All the normal show activities will be included, with classes for horticulture, domestic and for children and the very popular dog show.

The organisers are appealing for entries to be submitted as soon as possible. This also applies to trade stands.

“Last year, we had to turn some away because we were over subscribed,’’ said Clare.

Schedules can be down loaded at kingtonshow.co.uk. For dog show schedules call Jenny Dennis on 01544 230223 and for horticultural and domestic, call Anne Preece on 01544 327539.
