Markets in Herefordshire and surrounding counties started to return to normal this week with live sales of stock beginning again after the foot and mouth disease scare.
Only a few weeks ago the agricultural industry held its breath after cases of the feared disease were confirmed on a farm in Surrey. But, thankfully, that outbreak was contained and, slowly, restrictions have been lifted so that stock farmers can begin to return to a normal routine.
At Hereford Market on Wednesday, Hereford Market Auctioneers organised its first sale of sheep for a month and, says Michael Evans, a director of the firm, trade was strong on the entry of 1,470 lambs and killing ewes.
In these early days after foot and mouth biosecurity is vital, but Mr Evans said everyone attending the market appreciated its necessity and co-operated with its requirements.
