BRIGHTWELLS reports a superb show of close to 1300 sheep at their spring show and a buoyant trade to realise an overall average of 238.4p/kg at Rhayader Market on May 23.

The results of the show was as follows;

Class 1 Best 5 lambs over34kg: 1st - H and E Powell, Llwyngwillim 40kg - £120; 2nd - W Richards, Pencaerhelem 37.5kg - £90.

Class 2 Best 5 lambs 34kg under: 1st - CR and JE Evans, Ciloerwynt 33kg - £83.80; 2nd - JAV Mills and Sons, Llanerchllwyd 32kg - £76.20.

The show was judged by Mr Mark Jones and sponsored by Mid Wales Incineration Ltd.

There was 1200 spring lambs with the majority being lightweight with only 45 lambs over 39kg, with vendors taking advantage of the good trade by selling at a lighter weight. The top price per kg and per head was 300p/kg for the First Prize lambs from H and E Powell, Llwyngwillin 40kg £120. The SQQ of the market was 238p/kg which would be 40p/kg up on the year.

29kg - £72.50 - 250.0p/kg - J Lewis, Mathafarn.

33kg - £83.80 - 253.9/kg - CR and JE Evans, Ciloerwynt.

37kg - £92.80 - 250.8p/kg - AL Davies and Son, Park.

39kg - £99.50 - 255.1p/kg - AL Davies and Son, Park.

39.5kg - £100 - 253.2p/kg - T Davies and Co, Llwyncadwgan.

40kg - £101 - 252.5p/kg - E and M Lloyd, Glancamddwr.

40kg - £120– 300.0p/kg - H and E Powell, Llwyngwillim.

There was a small entry of Ewes and Tegs which met with 4 buyers and good trade.

More lambs and ewes are wanted on weekly basis to meet current demand.
