McCARTNEYS report a good entry of cattle for their January sale of store cattle, together with the dispersal sale of the Lyonshall pedigree Limousin herd.

The store cattle trade is still under pressure due to fat cattle prices particularly on the older stronger store cattle. Younger and lighter store cattle would sell to the best trade in terms of pence per kilogram.

The trade at Kington would be as good as anywhere and with the store cattle looking a particularly good trade compared to what similar cattle are worth when sold fat at present.

Again quality cattle sold to market premiums and those that would hit the super market specs.

We had a good contingent of buyers which competed well for the cattle.

The cattle at this sale would be variable sorts.

January cattle sale prices were as follows:

Top price paid for cattle on the day was £1050 for some Charolais heifers from LJ Hamer and Son.

Steers averaged £1.98 per kg with a top of £2.15 per kg for some Limousin cross steers from JW Lloyd and Son.

All Steers forward at the sale averaged £992 per head with a top of £1000 per head.

Heifers averaged £1.90 per kg with a top of £2.32per kg for some Charolais cross heifers from JW Lloyd and Sons.

All Heifers forward at the sale averaged £953 per head with a top of £1050 per head.

Dispersal sale of the Lyonshall Pedigree Limousin Herd on behalf of Nick Layton Park Gate Farm.

The herd was a credit to the vendor and this was confirmed by a packed ring of potential purchasers.

The herd was well bred and included well know pedigrees such as Sympa, Tango, Abba, Dinmore, Wilodge, and Bial.

Pedigree Limousin Cows with Pedigree Heifer calves at foot averaged £2300 per out fit up to £2835 per out fit.

Pedigree Limousin Incalf Cows averaged £1850 per head up to £2050 per head.

Pedigree Limousin Incalf Heifers averaged £2150 per head up to £2520 per head.

Pedigree Bull calves sold off the cows average £1000 per head.

The Pedigree Limousin stock bull sold for £2100.
