LAMBS - A much larger entry of 1580 lambs to a selective trade with only lightweights showing an average above 140 pence at 144.37p/kg. Well finished stronger lambs 38-45kgs also in demand with well bred sorts around 150p

Cull sheep - 477 culls sold to a firmer trade all round. Suffolks sold to £88 from PH Williams and £83.50 from JCD and KA Richardson and Son. Texel cross to £82 twice, from PW Maddocks and GG and HE Sevenoaks. Plenty of pens of second quality £65 pus. Welsh ewes sold to £52.50 from AW and DM Pritchard, the best generally £45 plus, several men after grazing ewes put a good bottom in the trade, only the very plain or small under £30. Cull rams to £86.50 for Cheviots from RW Lewis and Miss M Hawkins, not many strong rams on offer. Wethers sold to £55.50 from M Thomas and £55 from HT Stephens.

Store sheep - An improved entry of 483 store lambs sold to a large crowd of buyers. Bunches of evenly drawn lambs sold at a premium, Suffolk cross to £60 and £56 from DA and WA Stone, Charollais cross to £54 from JJE Price and also K Murphy. Long term lambs were generally £40-£50, only the very small under £30. Ram lambs sold to £55 for Texel cross from WTB Davies, smaller Welsh lambs to £40.50. Ewe lambs topped at £60 for Suffolk cross from J and N Farming, also selling Charollais cross to £57.

A small entry of breeding ewes saw yearlings to £76 from TS Watkins. Five year old Welsh from PE and SE Morris topped at £55. A larger entry of 50 rams, top call of £410 went to a tremendous Texel yearling from WG Davies and Son, other Texels to £370 from DI Jones. Suffolk yearling sold to £250 from GO Farm Ltd, Charollais to £235 from DK Jones, Welsh yearlings achieved a top of £200 from OB Williams. A smart Suffolk ram lamb from GO Farm Ltd sold to £220, Texel lambs to £150 from MT and DR Watkins.

Calves - 44 young calves selling to a difficult trade. Blue bulls peaked at £325 for Price and Co Farming Ltd, with only three over £300 and other smaller sorts £265-£285. Only one heifer over £300 which was a suckler bred Limousin cross which sold at £340 for GG Lewis. Blue heifers £250-£300. A month old Hereford Bull made £295 for WTR and JA Parry, whilst some three month old calves sold at £350 and £340 for K and S Powell. Angus bulls £250 and £240 from RHF Heeps and Son. Dairy bulls to £95 for a five week old calf from C Long and Son with the best all £60 plus and smaller types £20-£40. A three month old Holstein Friesian bull made £145 from K and S Powell.

Strong calves - 19 strong calves sold to an easier trade.

4mth Lim Steers £500 and £490; three month Lim Steers £435; five month Lim Heifers £440; three month Lim Heifers £375; four month Char Heifer £445; 5mth Hereford Heifer £450.

Breeding cattle - A larger entry of 46 breeding cattle met a steady trade with top selling at £1270 for a seven year old Hereford cow and her month old Blonde bull calf from Miss MG Clayton. This excellent run included others at £1180, £1160 and £1140. GJ and PA Robins and Sons sold Angus heifers and calves to a top of £1220 with others at £1100. G and M Groucott sold a Hereford cow and Blonde heifer calf at £1170. An eight year old Limousin bull from E and DJ Jones sold to £1080 with an 18 month old Hereford from Dudley Bros at £935.

Feeding bulls, stirks/young stores – Just seven Bulls forward, with three, 18 month Herefords from HT Davies and Partners selling to a top of £875 with others from the same home at £800. 35 stirks forward to meet another flying trade with the young cattle easily outselling the older entry. Five and nine month old Charolais steers from J and Mrs HL Hudd sold to a top of £790, with others at £720 and £710. SL Edwards and Sons sold five and six month old Limousin steers at £750. Five to nine month heifers from the same home sold to £600. Aberdeen Angus heifers from Mrs S Roberts sold to £635.

Store cattle - Another large entry of 427 store cattle forward selling to a strong trade and dearer on the week. Fewer yearlings present after the calf sale earlier in the week and insufficient feeding cattle for the buyers present. An outstanding Limousin cross steer to £1380 (700kg-26kg) from T. Davies, Trelewis. D. Lewis, Old Hereford Rd, sold Charolais cross to £1240 (624kg-25 month), with further steers to £1220 (635kg-25 months) from GT Goldworthy. A super pen of South Devon cross steers to £1195 (600kg-21 months) from AH Rosser. Wintering steers sold to £1250 (500kg-19 months) for Limousin cross from JCD and KA Richardson and Son with similar steers to £1180 (535kg-18 months), £1150 (492kg-17 months) from the same home. Yearling steers to £1130, £1120, £1090 and £1040 for superb Charolais cross from Williams Partners, Blackmill. Aberdeen Angus sired cattle continue to meet a selective trade with suckler bred sorts still fetching a premium. Feeding steers sold to £1055 (18-23 months) from SG Luff and Son. The Holstein Freisians were a mixed bag and those lacking flesh were harder to place. Feeding steers sold to £750 (22 months) from NO and C Sprackling.

Well fleshed feeding heifers were easy to place and short of buyers' requirements. British Blue cross topped at £1335 (665kg-24 months) for an outstanding heifer from M George. JL Morgan, Church Village sold Limousin cross to £1045 (520kg-27 months). DA Thomas and Son, Duffryn sold strong Limousin cross to £1040 (580kg-26 months). Wintering heifers sold to £950 (455kg-17 months) for Charolais cross from EA Jones, Llanover. Yearling heifers sold to £800 for an eye catching bunch of British Blue cross from L West.

Cull cattle - 43 cows again with a shortage of Grade 1 sorts, but to a good trade throughout. Top price on the day a Charolais Bull from GA Howells and Son at £1305. Best of the cows also a Charolais from EB Jenkins and Son at £1015, closely followed by a British Blue from the same home at £1010. Welsh Blacks to £935 from Miss L Howells. Friesians to £880 from GG Davies and Son.
