145 STORE cattle, 30 cows and calves and 15 barren cows: A truly lovely entry of store cattle sold to a fantastic trade, much better than anyone anticipated especially after recent reports from other centres. Despite some abattoirs penalising suppliers for over 450kg dead cattle, we still had a phenomenal trade on those strongest and best quality types topping at £1435/head on a pair of store steers from G.Thomas, Porthmorddwr. So good was the steer trade that the top 20 prices were all in excess of £1100/head. Mr T Powell, Penrheol claimed the top price/kilo at 235p/kg for 510kg Limousin. The steers averaged £1070/head. The heifers were also an excellent trade in fact on average they were dearer than the steers topping at £1335/head for a 630kg heifer from P.L Watkins, Caenantmelyn. Heifers topped at 243p/kg for a pair of 15 month 350kg Limousins from ELW Lloyd, Pentresollars. On this trade many more cattle could have been sold and once again Talgarth Market continues to prove itself as a quality outlet for store cattle.

25 cows and calves - Five in calf heifers: A superb show of cows and calves from the dispersal of the late Mr Rob Prosser, Genffordd. The cattle looked in terrific condition and were a credit to Rob and a shining example of what a stockman he was. The cows and calves were well sought after topping at £1820/head with several other outfits close behind at £1800, £1700 and £1680. The cows varied considerably in age from young heifers to 13 year olds. An overall average of £1352/head was attained which was considered to be an excellent trade. Our thanks goes to the family, friends and neighbours for their support leading up to and including the sale day.

14 cull cows: An improved entry of cull cows sold to a stronger trade despite rumours of a fall. Lack of exports and increased imports and the fact that some firms are determined not to source Livestock Market cows we were still able to provide a trade as dear if not dearer than anywhere. Cows topped at £1260/head for an eight year old cow from Nantyglasdwr Farms and they averaged £780/head to include all types, topping at 147p/kg. Meat and frame with Farm Assurance in greatest demand. Non assured cows are harder work.
