Talgarth Market, September 18

2021 spring lambs - A terrific entry of fat lambs sold to a much improved and better trade than many vendors were expecting. Meated and tup lambs were in excellent demand, resulting in a SQQ of 161.4p/kg topping at 174p/kg for a pen of 42kg lambs from JR Lloyd, Cefn-Y-Blaen. We had plenty of buyers forward to cope with this number of lambs. Price achieved today would be well ahead of any deadweight quotation.

564 cull ewes and rams - An excellent entry of killing ewes sold to a good level trade with ewes topping at £130/hd. All types in good demand, however the smaller and plainer Welsh ewes would be slightly easier due to the sheer number of these type of ewes forward around the country.

507 breeding ewes/15 breeding rams - An excellent entry of breeding ewes with 90% clearance effected. The sale was made up of an excellent entry of sheep from the estate of the late RG Prosser, Genffordd Farm. There were buyers forward for all types and ages and more breeding stock could have been sold on the trade.

Top prices: Breeding ewes: £122 Williams Farm, Old Rectory; breeding ram: £294 KML Davies, Dan-Y-Comin.

237 – ewe lambs. A good entry of ewe lambs sold to a stronger trade than expected and more could have been sold on the evening.

Top price: breeding lambs: £87 NR and RA Davies, Tainewydd.
