A TEN-month-old heifer from Herefordshire was crowned queen of one of the biggest shows of Hereford cattle in Europe.

Greenyards 1 Jubilee sported the grand female champion rosette at the Annual Christmas Calf Show at Shrewsbury Livestock Market where more than 80 calves were put forward.

From loyal show supporters and sponsors, PJ & AC Allman, and shown by Matthew Gray, Jubilee is out of Broatch 1 Jubilee and by Greenyards 1 Henry.

The classes were judged by Richard Dorrell, from Shrawley, Worcestershire, who farms in partnership with his father at Stonegrove Livestock and runs run a pedigree herd of Devon cattle and a flock of pedigree Shropshire sheep.

Standing reserve in the Grand Female Championship was the impressive Dendor 1 Jennefer 15th, owned and exhibited by B Birch & G Brindley of Weston, Staffordshire.

Fourteen-month-old Jennefer 15th is out of Dendor 1 Jennefer 8th and by top sire Solpoll 1 Gilbert.

Other female class winners were; A & SG Stevenson & Sons with Alvian 1 Lusty Ambrosia, MJ Clark with Lowesmoor 1 Sylvan 972, Harvey Bothers with Harveybros 1 Venture Lady and LR & AM Ayre, South Molton, Devon with Frenchstone P. 1 Ella.

It was the Normanton Herefords from TD & WT Livesey, Leicestershire, however that stole the show.

Taking the supreme championship was Normanton 1 Lionel, an 11-month-old embryo transfer (ET) calf out of Normanton 1 Jews Ear C21 and by stock sire Dendor 1 Harinordoquy.

Lionel’s success at the Christmas Calf Show adds to the previous successes of ET stablemate Normanton 1 Laertes at the National Calf Show at Agri-expo, Carlisle and the Midlands & East Anglia Calf Show held at Newark.

The ET breeding programme was featured on BBC Countryfile, and the technique involved flushing eggs from former female of the year, Normanton 1 Jews Ear C21 before being fertilised by chosen sires.

In the bull calf section and standing as Reserve Grand Male Champion, to Normanton 1 Lionel, was Hawkesbury 1 Volvic from D & E Colledge, Coventry, Warwickshire.

It was a frustrating show for nine month old Volvic as he stood reserve to Lionel throughout the day - in their class and the Grand Male & Supreme Championships. Hawkesbury 1 Volvic is out of Hawkesbury 1 Velvet and by successful show bull, Hawkesbury 1 Ronaldo.

Other Class winners in the Bull section were; MJ Clark, Tetbury, Gloucestershire, with Lowesmoor 1 Krug, TD & WT Livesey with Normanton 1 Laertes, MJ & HM Timmis with Shraden 1 Leonidas, DE, ED & AL Jones with Dendor 1 Leinster and in the final bull class of the day EL Lewis, from Dilwyn, Herefordshire, with Haven Lamborghini.
