Workers struggle on

COUNCIL staff were "struggling on in despair" facing job cuts, a below-inflation pay offer, the whim of outside consultants and virtual privatisation of key services, according to the authority's biggest union.

UNISON has responded to the findings of the Crookall Report by slamming the "state of permanent organisational up-heaval" its members were working in.

"Yet again these members, providing day-to-day services, have to pick up the pieces of senior officers' and councillors' actions.

"Let's hope that the Crookall Report will start some fundamental soul searching at the top - employees are council tax payers and voters too," said county UNISON secretary Eddie Clark.
