PUPILS at a Herefordshire school have been making headlines of their own with their own newspaper and its win in a national competition.

Bredenbury Primary School was awarded a ‘highly commended’ in the national Newsday 2008 contest after pupils demonstrated a talent for reporting. It involved them putting together their own newspaper featuring a combination of national, local news and sport. The judges said the Bredenbury Times had a wealth of well written articles and was attractively designed, making good use of photographs, colours and graphics.

It also looks as if pupils enjoyed the use of puns in their headlines.

“The front page was the budget and the headline was ‘Darling Budget of March’,” said teacher Liz Williams.

“We used the Hereford Times website to find news as well and also included events that happened in school.” Some of the pupils involved will now be taking a trip to a presentation at London's Docklands next month.
