Although the cuckoo is said to now be a rare visitor to our shores several reports of the bird being heard here in Herefordshire have been made to Bird Patrol in the past week.

Nightingales have returned to Herefordshire. Bird Patrol has received reports that this melodious migrant has been heard in both the Fownhope and Mathon areas.

Swallows' incredible journey

Undertaking an incredible but hazardous journey from South Africa to northern Europe, the migrating swallow can cover more than 200 miles a day at speeds of 17-22 miles per hour. Swallows arrive in the UK in April and May, returning to their southern wintering grounds in September and October.
