12:00pm Thursday 15th September 2011 in Features
IN spite of some early rain before the show’s official opening, the afternoon was dry and once again there were a splendid number of exhibitors and visitors.
The sun shone for the committee chairman, Brynmor Powell, to say a few words and then introduce this year’s president, Keith Davies, who made a gracious and welcoming opening speech. Keith is a well-respected local figure and, along with his wife Sandra, a long-time supporter and committee nember of the Erwood Show.
The show Queen, Hannah Powell, looked stunning in a blue dress and was presented with a cream sash and tiara by the original 1961 show queen, Pearl Thomas (nee Evans of Cilmery). Hannah carried a gold-themed bouquet in honour of the show’s 50th anniversary and was warm and charming with everyone. Keith and Hannah did excellent work throughout the day presenting the many cups and prizes.
With over £1,700 in prize money to be competed for, there was a goodly mixture of serious and fun entries.
Most notable were the superb cattle classes, the best in living memory, with many entries also having been exhibited at this summer’s Royal Welsh Show. Horse and sheep entries were also notable for their high standard. It was also a pleasure to see the Glyn Celyn Beagles, the vintage and classic vehicles display and the many stalls and competitions for adults and children on offer.
