Memorial serviced for Hereford-born founder of horse rescue

8:00am Saturday 24th April 2010

THE Hereford-born founder of a national animal welfare group has died at the age of 79.

Alasdair MacGregor launched the Society for the Welfare of Horses and Ponies in the early 1980s after caring for 13 emaciated horses at his own home near Abergavenny.

The son of a surgeon, Alastair was born and raised in Hereford before settling with wife Jenny over the Welsh border but he remained wellknown in Herefordshire.

During their time with the charity, he helped more than 1,000 abused and neglected horses back to health.

It was his wish that the work of the SWHP should continue.

He died suddenly in hospital in London.

He is survived by Jenny, his three children and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at St Mary’s Church, Monmouth, at 2.30pm on Monday.
