Noted Hereford solicitor and shoot member dies

HUNDREDS of tributes have poured in to the family of Hereford solicitor Gary Davies whose funeral took place on Tuesday.

Mr Davies had been a solicitor in Herefordshire and its borders for more than 40 years and was a leading partner in the Hereford firm of Beaumont, Smith and Davies.

He retired in 2003 and died in hospital last week, his funeral taking place at Llanwarne Church.

Gary Gerard Haydn Davies was born in Brecon in 1934, one of three brothers, and went to Christ College in the town.

All three boys studied at Pembroke College, Cambridge.

Before his university days he completed his National Service with the Devonshire Regiment, and became an instructor at Mons Barracks, Camberley, in Surrey.

He then returned to Brecon, joining the firm of Peter de Winton and then moved to Newport where he worked in the town clerk’s department and qualified as a solicitor.

Mr Davies came to Hereford in 1962, joining the firm of the late Sam Beaumont and later becoming a partner with Morley Smith to form Beaumont, Smith and Davies in Offa Street. Defence work was his speciality.

He was a former president of the Conservative Association in Hereford and chairman of his local branch in the south of the county.

Mr Davies was solicitor to Hereford Welsh Club where he laid the foundation stone to its new building in 1967.

Other interests included shooting and fishing.

He was a founder member of the Tregate anglers on the Monnow.

Mr Davies was a founder member of the Bromley shoot where he stayed for 48 years and nearly as long with the Treago shoot.

He loved, and always owned, Welsh springer spaniels.

Among his other interests was that of Freemasonry and he was a member of the Cantelupe Lodge in Hereford for many years.

Mr Davies is survived by his wife Jennifer and their three children – Guy, also a solicitor, Jessica who lives with her husband and four children in Hong Kong and daughter Rowena and her husband and two children.
