A MAN who has transformed the Waterworks Museum into one of the most celebrated in the country has been awarded an MBE.
Dr Noel Meek, from Marstow, was honoured for his voluntary work after being a trustee at the museum since 1990, the last 10 as chairman.
“I feel humble and immensely proud to have received this award, which was totally unexpected as so few people get them,” said Dr Meek.
“However, even though it is a great honour for me personally, it is also a great recognition for the Waterworks Museum and the industry itself.”
The museum in Broomy Hill currently houses about 15 working engines, including one that was used at Rotherwas Industrial Estate during the Second World War and later restored.
“Considering the range of engines that we have, I think that we are in the top two or three biggest water museums in the country,” said Dr Meek.
“It is run totally by volunteers who work tremendously hard.
“It really has come on leaps and bounds.”
The museum also has a visitor centre and many schoolchildren are given a tour of it every year as part of the museum’s education programme.
