THE chief fire officer for Hereford and Worcester Fire Service has been awarded the Queen’s Fire Service Medal in recognition of his distinguished service.
Paul Hayden, who has been in the role since 2005, has been a prime mover in developing a national centralised command and control system when floods hit and, in November, he helped co-ordinate flood rescue and relief efforts in the north of England after storms hit Cumbria.
He and his team were also highly praised following the devastating floods in the summer of 2007 after helping get vital equipment to the areas where it was most needed.
In September he managed the UK contribution to EU Flood Ex in the Netherlands, which was the largest practical flood exercise that the EU has staged.
