Peter Manders' Herefordshire scene

PETER Manders found this idyllic setting at World’s End, Staunton-on-Wye, having walked along a track, starting from opposite Hinton Farm, to its end.

The area beyond is known as Letton Lake wetlands and in former times was prone to flooding. Even today, there are no proper roads across the area.

The stile to the left of the painting connects to the end of two dead end lanes that extend into the wetlands north of Staunton-on-Wye: Duck Street and one further west that leads to a small community known as Little London.

Along these lanes are what were once squatters’ cottages, homes for seasonal agricultural workers and those eking out a living on the marshy common.

Now they are much sought-after homes.
