Kington Carnival with comedy capers

KINGTON residents had the last laugh by rounding off the town’s 2009 comedy-themed festival with a colourful and imaginative parade through the town.

Fancy dress entrants recreated some of TV’s best-loved characters during the annual carnival and gala day and rounded off 10 days of fun.

Residents had previously enjoyed puppet shows, treasure hunts, a choir performance and even a donkey derby during a packed programme of activities, before carnival revellers saw out the festivities bathed in bright sunshine on Saturday afternoon.

“It was a huge success,” said organiser Nikki Jones. “The entertainment and activities were just brilliant.”

Among Saturday’s winners was a team from the Wine Vaults, which claimed the best adult float prize as the cast of comedy classic Only Fools and Horses, and two families – the Burtons and the Williams – who received the children’s float prize for their depiction of Last of the Summer Wine.

Jess Cotton, Marianne Thompson, Anna and Henry Yeomans, George and Chloe Bembo, Emily Phillips, Molly and Emily Flood, Kizzie Fitzwilliams and Holly Williams also impressed judges with their neon circus and came away with the Johnny Price Memorial Trophy as a result.

One final, post-festival event will follow on July 12 when the Hereford Big Band performs at Kington Golf Club.
