PRIME Lambs - 1908: A few less than last week but the same trade of 182.9p SQQ, 20p more than a year ago. Standards 180.6p, mediums 183.1p, heavies 185.5p. Heavies to £105 with plenty in the £90's and best export to 196.6p. More light and lean lambs forward but it is weight and meat that is needed. 40kg can be £72 but 44kg at £80 would seem a far better 'lump' of money at the end of the day. Export and home trade competing well all day, but 2500 needed every week to keep orders.

Several men looking for stronger bunches today as the fat trade maintains recent levels if not slightly firmer. Medium keeping lambs very similar from £55 to £61.50. Well bred larger keeping sorts from £50 to £54.50.

Harder bred sheep forward in more numbers with the strongest £45 to £50. Smaller and plain lambs from £38 to £44.50 and looking very well sold in comparison to some medium keep lambs. Ram lambs in good demand with several customers looking for continental lambs and stronger sorts. The stronger ram lambs to £65.50. Several £58 to £64.50. Medium type lambs £52 to £57, with smaller, plain and harder bred sorts from £42 to £50. Overall average £56.39.

Cull ewes - 2909: A terrific entry of cull ewes with 100% clearance effected. The trade was buoyant throughout and those strongest framed and meated continental types were in greatest demand. A large proportion of Welsh and Speckle ewes forward which were as dear as ever, however it was noticeable that the trade on these did ease as the sale went on. Looking at last year's price trend the trade fell from now on in as the numbers came, but with the forthcoming festival approaching hopefully the trade will hold at least until the festival is over.
