SPRING Lambs - 2572: The largest entry this year met a trade 20p above last year at 200.8p up to 251.4p with the best all in the 220's and 230's. All good export sheep 210p+ with heavies to £96, £95, £92, £91.50. We can have a good premium for the best white faced Beltex cross Texel lambs so please keep them coming, but as usual make sure they are meat. Farm assurance more important today as heavier lambs of 44kg+ need to be farm assured to go to supermarkets. 2500 needed every week.

Dry ewe hoggs - 361: A smaller entry of ewe hoggs however several bunches catching the eye and looking exceptionally well sold. Texel cross hoggs topped the section at £138, other strong and good headed Texels to £132. Other stronger well bred sorts £104 to £117. Smaller types from £80 to £98. Suffolk cross Mules to £122 for a strong and smart headed bunch, other smart headed sorts from £110 to £114, although generally less men today for the Suffolks. Smaller sorts from £85 to £96 with sheep to suit all price ranges. Welsh Mules topped at £118 twice for some very smart headed coloured Mules, white faced Mules from £82 to £93 but were smaller sheep.

Rearing/weaned calves - 38: What a trade! A nice entry which consisted a range of cattle - some weanlings look as dear as we have seen them and on this trade many more could have been sold. Rearing calves also very keenly bid for topping at £465 for a Blonde bull. Blue bulls to £355, others £250 to £345, Limousin bull to £305. Blue heifers sold to good interest topping at £360, other stronger sorts £260 to £335, smaller Blues £180 to £245. Angus heifers to £245 and £180. Friesians to £20 for small types. Weanlings topped at £690 for a Charolais cross bull at 6½ months, others from the same home, similar age from £610 to £635. South Devon bulls to £380. Blue heifers, 4/5 months to £490 and £455, Blonde and Limousin heifers same age to £500. A Simmental heifer to £430, smaller Limousins to £460. A bunch of Angus heifers from 7/14 months looked well sold at £370. A total clearance with more weanlings and rearing calves required.

Ewes and lambs - 475 and 561: A tremendous entry for the first week of June was met with another large crowd of purchasers from a wide area. Couples topped at £104 for a 4 year old Charollais ewe and twin lambs. Suffolk cross Mule ewes, yearlings last autumn to £172 for 11 ewes and 21 lambs. A shortage of lowland younger ewes with Mule ewes, yearlings last autumn to £169, others £148 to £168. Other Texel cross ewes from £140 to £160, generally £58-£65/life. Strong singles from £60-£76/life.

Hill bred ewes looked exceptionally well sold throughout with a pen of 3/4 year old Beulahs with singles to £137, other hill ewes mostly full and broken mouth and ranging from £38-£45/life, £75 to £90 for singles. Ewes with more lambs £90 to £125 depending on the number of lambs.

A large entry of hoggs and lambs which included some stronger sorts which looked well sold. Suffolk cross Mules topping at £182 for some very strong sorts with twins, other Suffolks from £130-£142, harder bred Suffolk cross to £121. Texel cross Mules with strength and well bred lambs to keen interest topping at £175, other stronger types from £145-£174, smaller sorts from £105 to £130 and look very well sold. Welsh Mules to £173 for a super bunch of coloured Mules, others from £130 to £140, white faced Mules to £173, other stronger sorts £140 to £169 although the higher prices were for hoggs with twins. Smaller Mules from £120 to £135. Overall average £57.12/life which includes 3 bunches of Soay ewes and lambs from £28-£32/outfit.

Cull ewes - 2350: Another terrific entry of ewes sold to an improved trade with ewes topping at £133.50/head, with several other pens close behind at £129.50/head and £118.50/head. The top 20 prices all in excess of £110/head. Rams a serious trade up to £131.50/head with any amount £120/head plus. Plenty of buyers forward which resulted in an average £2/head dearer than last week. Increased demand ready for the forthcoming festival so keep the ewes coming! All types in plenty of demand, the lean, fat, big and small with no shortage of competition!
