PRIME hoggs - 800: A very small entry but very good quality hoggs met a flying trade with SQQ of 194.6p and overall 185.5p, with every hogg averaging £87.55.

Home and export trade competing well for every sheep with the Euro at 79p.

The export trade is leading and numbers are getting very short. Meat is 'king' so please put the 'finishing touch' to the hoggs and complete the job.

More hoggs needed.

Spring lambs - 37: A small entry of very good quality lambs met very good competition to £109/head. 43kg (259p/kg) and 273.1p for 39kg at £106.50.

Every lamb averaged £101.85. Lambs now required every week in quantity as hoggs become more scarce.

Premium weight 34-38kg - fresh outdoor lambs preferably.

Ewes and lambs - 411 and 624: The larger more varied entry included some better lowland ewes with lambs.

Trade was improved on all sorts with well-backed ewes with stronger lambs always to best demand.

An exceptional Texel 4 year old with a ram lamb topped the sale at £210.

Other very strong singles from £162 to £201. Many other ewes with singles from £100 to £150.

More younger ewes on offer this week with a bunch of 11 Suffolk cross yearling and 2 year olds with their 22 younger lambs selling to £171.

Others with singles or just over from £140 to £164.

Older ewes with twins sold consistently well with many from £140 to £164.

The entry included the first entries of Suffolk cross hoggs with their younger lambs - two pens of 10 with singles sold at £134 and £137.

A larger supply of hill type ewes with lambs also met a better demand with better doubles from £101 to £130.

Better singles from £73 to £108. Harder bred from £60 to £83 with a total clearance effected. Overall average £127.30/couple, £50.52/life.

Store hoggs - 584: A good show of hoggs for the last week in March with the strongest hoggs very dear, smaller and plain hoggs not on feed at reduced money.

Several good bunches of strong hoggs topping at £83.20, other very strong types £74.50 to £80.80.

Good farming sorts from £68 to £74.

Medium term farming sheep from £58 to £66.50, longer keeping types £50 to £57.50.

Harder bred, hill types and plain hoggs £40 to £50. Very plain and small £32 to £39.50.

Ram hoggs topped at £79, all strength over £70 to £77.20.

Hill bred sorts topped at £66 for a super bunch of Welsh ram hoggs.

Smaller sorts from £50 to £64, very small and plain from £40 to £50.

Dry ewe hoggs - 30: A small but top quality entry of mostly pure bred Suffolk and Charollais ewe hoggs sold to £168 for 5 strong Suffolks and another pen at £116.

Charollais hoggs sold to £105, others from £92 to £98.

Just 2 Suffolk cross hoggs were strong and smart and sold at £96.

Rearing/weaned calves - 41: A good entry of 16 rearing calves, we need a weekly supply as several customers today looking for a calf to replace or add to a suckling cow.

Rearing calves sold to £470 for a Charolais cross bull out of a Friesian from Mr J Bennion.

He also sold a British Blue cross bull at £460.

Other younger calves sold to £355 for a Blonde cross bull with others at £250.

A run of strong Hereford cross calves sold to £330 for a 30 day bull.

Hereford cross heifers from the same farm £200 to £290. 6 Friesian bulls from £55 to £70.

The draft of 24 British Blue cross heifers, 4 months old were well received with prices from £320 to £445.

Other continental cross heifers from the same draft from £130 to £370. 2 Limousin cross heifers with more shape, 5/6 months old at £570 and £640.

More calves can be sold each week - please let the office know by 10am on Tuesday prior to the sale if you are bringing calves.

Cull ewes - 1474: Absolutely superb, what can only be described as a bonanza! A fabulous trade right through, everything in demand.

Ewes topping at £139.50/head with plenty of pens close behind at £135, £130.50, £128.50, £125.50 and £124.50/head and the top 20 prices all in excess of £111/head.

The ewes have averaged a mighty £83.30/head for everything forward - when Mules are making £100/head with plenty in excess of £90/head, what more do you want?

Rams were serious topping at £138/head. With a trade like today at least double the number could have been sold and that's no fairy story.

Buyers were left short of their orders so more are required next week to maintain our excellent buying support.
