THE annual Herefordshire Young Farmers Club hedging match will take place on Sunday, February 7.

A good entry is expected for the competition which is being held at The Whittern, near Kington.

Competitors are required to stake, pleach and heather a specified length of hedge in the time allowed.

The match has a history dating back to 1948 and is an ideal way for young members to learn the traditional countryside skill.

There are classes for individuals and for teams of two, and there are both unaided competitions for those who've done it before, and aided competitions for novices attempting it for the first time.

It will also be Mark Jones' first hedging match as chairman of the task group.

"I've been over competing age for a couple of years now, and I miss taking part in the hedging as it was always my favourite competition of the year," he said.

"When I was approached to come back and look after the committee I didn't hesitate to say yes.

"It's a skill that involves a lot of time and dedication and I hope that we're able to maintain the high standard of competition that was on show last year.

"Craswall YFC are looking to defend their winning record, but there's plenty of other competitors looking to beat them to it."

The Agricultural Valuers Association Trophy will be awarded to the club gaining the highest marks in all classes.

The Pencombe Agricultural Society Cup will be awarded to the club gaining the highest marks in classes two and three.

The hedging will begin at 9am and hedge sections should be ready for judging early afternoon. Spectators are welcome and there is no entrance fee. Bacon rolls, cake and hot drinks will be available throughout the day.
